{"id":11243,"date":"2011-06-01T01:05:16","date_gmt":"2011-06-01T06:05:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=11243"},"modified":"2011-06-01T01:05:54","modified_gmt":"2011-06-01T06:05:54","slug":"atheist-chaplains-and-independent-ideology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/06\/01\/atheist-chaplains-and-independent-ideology\/","title":{"rendered":"Atheist Chaplains and Independent Ideology, or Lack Thereof"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Christianity Today <\/em>re-covered the <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/05\/04\/atheist-chaplains-support-and-actual-atheist-goals\/\">prior discussion on &#8220;atheist Chaplains,&#8221;<\/a> asking the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianitytoday.com\/ct\/2011\/marchweb-only\/atheistsinfoxholes.html\">same question others had previously<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>All religious groups make absolutist claims of one kind or another. But how can a belief system &#8212; or is it a lack of belief system? &#8212; championed by figures like Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens support Christian soldiers in any meaningful sense? When considering chaplains who support Hitchens&#8217;s rather broad contention that &#8220;religion poisons everything,&#8221; how can such leaders &#8220;provide the means for others to observe their own faith&#8221;? If Christians are indeed suffering from a &#8220;God delusion,&#8221; as Dawkins has suggested, how can a chaplain who promotes Dawkins&#8217;s ideas offer belief-respecting encouragement to a Christian soldier?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The author acknowledges a similar accusation can be made against exclusive religions, but there is a positive response in the Christian faith and historical precedent (something <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/02\/24\/panel-chaplains-already-counseling-gays-serving-atheists\/\">Chaplains are already doing<\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>One might counter by suggesting that Christians themselves <!--more-->cannot meaningfully respect the beliefs of people of other faiths (or anti-faiths). But we can look to evidence to see that the reverse is true. Such charity stems from the biblical doctrine of the image of God, for starters&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>By contrast, the author contends atheism is inherently a (negative) response to theism &#8212; it has no independent ideology\u00a0or initiative.\u00a0 (This presumes a modern understanding of atheism as the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/05\/04\/atheist-chaplains-support-and-actual-atheist-goals\/\">New Atheism<\/a>,&#8221; or &#8220;anti-theism.&#8221;\u00a0 A dictionary-defined atheist would not necessarily fit the author&#8217;s contention.)\u00a0 In his perspective, atheism&#8217;s entire premise is predicated on a <em>response <\/em>to religion; it has no independent foundation:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Atheism, after all, is a response to theism, built off the back of Christianity and other faiths. It is inherently negative, built to attack, by nature opposed to religious belief.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While that may seem harsh, it seems to be borne out by current events.\u00a0 If you review the recent comments from atheists associated with\u00a0&#8220;Rock Beyond Belief,&#8221; for example, they are almost entirely\u00a0composed\u00a0of\u00a0negative reactions to religion (Christianity, in particular).\u00a0 There&#8217;s no significant content that presents a positive discussion on &#8220;reason&#8221; <em>independent of religion<\/em>, for example.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, that begs the question of what they&#8217;ll talk about for hours during <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/04\/05\/fort-bragg-atheist-concert-reverses-course-re-announces-event\/\">their event this fall<\/a>\u00a0at Fort Bragg.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Christianity Today re-covered the prior discussion on &#8220;atheist Chaplains,&#8221; asking the same question others had previously: All religious groups make absolutist claims of one kind or another.
