{"id":11174,"date":"2011-05-20T02:00:19","date_gmt":"2011-05-20T07:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=11174"},"modified":"2013-10-09T00:17:46","modified_gmt":"2013-10-09T03:17:46","slug":"a-clash-of-integrities-homosexuality-religion-and-the-military","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/05\/20\/a-clash-of-integrities-homosexuality-religion-and-the-military\/","title":{"rendered":"A Clash of Integrities:  Homosexuality, Religion, and the Military"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chuck Donovan of the Heritage Foundation has a lengthy but thorough discussion entitled &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.heritage.org\/research\/reports\/2011\/04\/a-clash-of-integrities-moral-and-religious-liberty-in-the-armed-forces\">A Clash of Integrities: Moral and Religious Liberty in the Armed Forces<\/a>.&#8221;\u00a0 The article discusses the controversy over homosexuality in the military, from the initial creation of the policy most commonly known as &#8220;Don&#8217;t Ask, Don&#8217;t Tell&#8221; to its current state.\u00a0 His analysis is thorough, and he doesn&#8217;t mince words:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The repeal of the 1993 law prohibiting open homosexuality in the military poses significant risk for military service members and chaplains who, as matters of religious or moral conviction, hold to traditional values regarding marriage and sexual behavior. The [Pentagon] report&#8230;[does] not allay concerns that the religious liberty and free speech rights of these service members and chaplains will be compromised to the detriment of their military careers.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Donovan notes the controversy that resulted in <em>Rigdon v Perry <\/em>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianfighterpilot.com\/religionandmilitary.htm#scotus\">noted here<\/a>) is precedent for the current repeal plan to cause conflict in the military.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps out of pragmatism, <!--more-->Donovan does not suggest re-instating the original law.\u00a0 Rather, among other analyses he makes five suggestions:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Emphasize the new law as a privacy standard and not a sexual orientation nondiscrimination code.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid politically correct speech codes. (<em>In response to policies discouraging the use of the word &#8220;homosexual.&#8221;<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li>Make clear that &#8220;political&#8221; and freedom of speech and assembly standards are the same for persons of differing moral conviction.
