{"id":11061,"date":"2011-05-09T02:06:59","date_gmt":"2011-05-09T07:06:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=11061"},"modified":"2015-06-27T19:15:22","modified_gmt":"2015-06-27T22:15:22","slug":"usaf-academy-chapel-dedicates-falcon-circle-for-pagans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/05\/09\/usaf-academy-chapel-dedicates-falcon-circle-for-pagans\/","title":{"rendered":"USAF Academy Chapel Dedicates &#8220;Falcon Circle&#8221; for Pagans?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The creation of a &#8220;pagan area&#8221; under the auspices of the US Air Force Academy Cadet Chapel was highly controversial <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/01\/29\/us-air-force-academy-adds-pagan-chapel\/\">more than a year ago<\/a>.\u00a0 Originally, a &#8220;dedication&#8221; was scheduled in March 2010.\u00a0 It seems the ceremony was delayed more than a year.<\/p>\n<p>USAFA announced it had dedicated the &#8220;Cadet Chapel Falcon Circle&#8221; last week on May 3rd.\u00a0 As <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/02\/24\/academy-pagan-leader-fears-brainwashed-christians\/#comments\">previously discussed<\/a>, the US military does not make a site &#8220;sacred,&#8221; so the &#8220;dedication&#8221; seems to have been more ceremonial or functional in nature.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.christianfighterpilot.com\/images\/usafapagan.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"476\" height=\"317\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, the article seems to indicate a slight tweak on the original purpose of the outdoor chapel.\u00a0 Originally, USAFA was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usafa.af.mil\/news\/story.asp?id=123187157\">said to be adding<\/a> &#8220;a worship area for followers of Earth-centered religions.&#8221;\u00a0 The new wording was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usafa.af.mil\/news\/story.asp?id=123254900\">somewhat more careful<\/a>\u00a0this year:\u00a0 <!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The circle&#8217;s original purpose was to accommodate the religious needs of the Earth-Centered Spirituality community. While priority is given to those groups and individuals, the space is available to all faith groups and individuals seeking an outdoor worship space.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It would seem that just as the earth-centered groups\u00a0can use\u00a0other chapel areas (including the unadorned &#8220;all faiths room&#8221; within the chapel proper), other groups can use the hilltop site for functions as well; say, an\u00a0Easter sunrise service.\u00a0 While this is largely true of all of the cadet chapel areas, there are still <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usafa.af.mil\/information\/factsheets\/factsheet.asp?id=9415\">designated faith areas in the rest of the chapel<\/a>\u00a0(ie, there is a Protestant Chapel, Jewish Chapel, etc.).\u00a0 The &#8220;all faiths&#8221; focus of this particular area\u00a0may be why it is &#8220;Falcon Circle,&#8221; rather than the &#8220;USAFA Pagan Chapel.&#8221;\u00a0 It may also be an acknowledgement of the fact the area was used for <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/02\/08\/usafa-pagan-circle-has-christian-history\/\">religious (and other) purposes before<\/a> it was appropriated for\u00a0&#8220;earth centered&#8221; religions.<\/p>\n<p>There may still be some confusion, however, as one article reported one of the cadets being &#8220;annoyed&#8221; over <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/04\/05\/usafa-pagan-cross-investigation-closed\/\">last year&#8217;s controversy<\/a>,\u00a0saying<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This is our space.\u00a0 We&#8217;re trying to call a space our own.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While &#8220;they&#8221; have priority, the USAFA release\u00a0indicates\u00a0the area\u00a0is not as exclusive as the cadet seems to think.<\/p>\n<p>There may be a bit of corporate amnesia as well.\u00a0 The <em>Colorado Springs Gazette <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gazette.com\/articles\/centered-117435-chapel-academy.html\">recalled the controversy<\/a> with:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Controversy sparked at the academy last year when a cross made from railroad ties was erected at another outdoor site that was used for Wiccan rites on the 18,500-acre base.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Except it wasn&#8217;t &#8220;another outdoor site.&#8221;\u00a0 It was this <em>same <\/em>location.\u00a0 (It also wasn&#8217;t Wicca.)<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony itself focused largely on military religious freedom:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Chaplain Cuneio [said] &#8220;[The ceremony was] honoring a military members&#8217; constitutional liberty to practice his or her faith, or no faith.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Cadet Chapel Falcon Circle represents the religious freedoms that all of us as military members, and as Americans, enjoy,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;It was a great day for USAFA because we are committed to religious accommodation and a culture of respect.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Cadets <a href=\"http:\/\/www.krdo.com\/news\/27768240\/detail.html\">agreed<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Cadets of all religions also came out to support the new chapel.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s just a great symbol of what the academy is capable of, how supporting we are of everyone who is a cadet,&#8221; said [Cadet] Philicia Fahrenbruck, president of the academy&#8217;s Interfaith Council&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>[Cadet Nicole] Johnson said she feels her [pagan] religion is accepted by fellow cadets, as it should be.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>No word yet from Michael Weinstein on how all of this &#8220;religious freedom&#8221; fits into the Christian coup he currently claims is in progress.\u00a0 Try as he might to manufacture a scandal, Weinstein&#8217;s continuous cries are repeatedly drowned out by the resounding chorus of religious freedom.\u00a0 And it irks him to no end.<\/p>\n<p>Also unclear is whether\u00a0Weinstein will sue over General Gould&#8217;s presence at the chapel dedication, which Weinstein will likely\u00a0claim is &#8220;coercive&#8221; to everyone lower ranked than the three-star general, and a &#8220;propaganda coup&#8221; for America&#8217;s adversaries.<\/p>\n<p>At least, that&#8217;s what Weinstein would have said if it was a Christian &#8220;circle.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The creation of a &#8220;pagan area&#8221; under the auspices of the US Air Force Academy Cadet Chapel was highly controversial more than a year ago.\u00a0 Originally, a &#8220;dedication&#8221; was scheduled in March 2010.\u00a0 It seems the ceremony was delayed more than a year.
