{"id":10915,"date":"2011-04-25T02:00:29","date_gmt":"2011-04-25T07:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=10915"},"modified":"2011-04-24T23:13:35","modified_gmt":"2011-04-25T04:13:35","slug":"us-army-teaches-evangelical-yoga","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/04\/25\/us-army-teaches-evangelical-yoga\/","title":{"rendered":"US Army Teaches Evangelical Yoga"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <em>Army Times <\/em>notes the US Army&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.catctraining.hqjmtc.army.mil\/soldier360.html\">Soldier 360\u00b0<\/a>&#8221; program aimed at &#8220;dealing with trauma and rebuilding relationships.&#8221;\u00a0 The article clearly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/2011\/04\/army-holistic-healing-taught-to-redeployed-troops-042311w\/\">connects the program with Eastern &#8220;spirituality&#8221;<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>An Army program has adopted some old Eastern practices to help allay modern post-combat stress&#8230;using holistic tactics, including yoga, acupuncture and meditation.<\/p>\n<p>The program ushers noncommissioned officers and spouses through a six-phase, behavior-modifying process called \u201clearn, do, practice, model, teach, and change,\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Interestingly, the program based on Eastern religions, taught by the Army, also has an &#8216;evangelical&#8217; aspect, as the program <!--more-->expects leaders will return to their units and &#8220;pass on&#8221; what they&#8217;ve learned:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Back at their units, graduates of the program are expected to pass on coping techniques to subordinates and peers struggling with stress or anxiety, or guide them to get help.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Despite the fact the program teaches clearly &#8220;spiritual&#8221; precepts, it is entirely permissible &#8212; and, in fact, admirable &#8212; that the Army would offer such voluntary programs for the welfare of its troops and their families.<\/p>\n<p>The same logic applies if the military were to offer a clearly Christian program with a similar intent.\u00a0 The goal in any case is not to convert the military members to a particular ideology (though the members certainly have the freedom to do so if they choose).\u00a0 The objective is to provide them with the options and resources they may need.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of a person&#8217;s beliefs, and despite critics&#8217; assertions, the US military most often does an admirable job of offering resources for dealing with the unique stresses of serving in the armed forces.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Army Times notes the US Army&#8217;s &#8220;Soldier 360\u00b0&#8221; program aimed at &#8220;dealing with trauma and rebuilding relationships.&#8221;\u00a0 The article clearly connects the program with Eastern &#8220;spirituality&#8221;: An Army program has adopted some old Eastern practices to help allay modern post-combat stress&#8230;using holistic tactics, including yoga, acupuncture and meditation.
