{"id":10236,"date":"2011-03-24T02:00:32","date_gmt":"2011-03-24T07:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=10236"},"modified":"2011-03-24T00:23:49","modified_gmt":"2011-03-24T05:23:49","slug":"us-navy-chaplain-hull-hops-to-protect-religious-freedom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/03\/24\/us-navy-chaplain-hull-hops-to-protect-religious-freedom\/","title":{"rendered":"US Navy Chaplain Hull-Hops to Protect Religious Freedom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The practice of &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/03\/17\/chaplains-traverse-afghanistan-to-serve\/\">fob-hopping<\/a>,&#8221; or Chaplains bouncing from one forward outpost to another to minister to the needs of the troops, has previously been discussed.<\/p>\n<p>Navy Chaplain (Lt) John Kelly adds another dimension to the extreme <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/news\/67216\/traveling-chaplain-graces-kearsarge\">means by which the US military protects the religious freedom<\/a> of its members.\u00a0 Chaplain Kelly is a Roman Catholic priest, one of the most underrepresented faiths in the Chaplaincy by percentage.<\/p>\n<p>Because not all Navy craft have access to a Catholic Chaplain, <!--more-->Chaplain Kelly has been &#8220;hull-hopping&#8221; from one boat (or ship, if you must) to another in the Kearsage Amphibious Ready Group afloat in the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n<p>Said the Sailors:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Bringing Chaplain Kelly aboard really shows that <em>Kearsarge<\/em> cares about taking care of its Sailors, despite what their religious beliefs are,&#8221; said Senior Chief&#8230;David Luther, one of the many Roman Catholics aboard <em>Kearsarge<\/em>. &#8220;The chaplains here do a great job in making sure we all get the services we need, and I am very grateful to Chaplain Kelly for making the trip here as often as he does.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This not only continues to demonstrate the lengths to which the US military goes to protect religious freedom within its ranks, but it also reiterates the closeness of Chaplains to &#8220;the front lines.&#8221;\u00a0 The USS <em>Kearsage<\/em> and its group are reportedly deeply involved in the <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/03\/21\/america-joins-conflict-in-libya-operation-odyssey-dawn\/\">conflict in Libya<\/a>, including launching the recovery effort of the <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/03\/22\/us-fighter-downed-in-libya\/\">downed fighter<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The practice of &#8220;fob-hopping,&#8221; or Chaplains bouncing from one forward outpost to another to minister to the needs of the troops, has previously been discussed.
