{"id":10204,"date":"2011-03-22T02:00:59","date_gmt":"2011-03-22T07:00:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=10204"},"modified":"2011-03-22T00:16:26","modified_gmt":"2011-03-22T05:16:26","slug":"us-army-eliminates-moral-character-as-requirement-for-service","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/03\/22\/us-army-eliminates-moral-character-as-requirement-for-service\/","title":{"rendered":"US Army Eliminates &#8220;Moral Character&#8221; as Requirement for Service"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The US Army recently published an updated version of Army Regulation 601-210, <em>Active and Reserve Components Enlistment Program<\/em>.\u00a0 The new version, dated 8 February 2011, makes an interesting change.\u00a0 From the list of revisions at the front of the regulation:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Changes all references of &#8220;moral qualification or waiver&#8221; to &#8220;conduct qualification or waiver&#8221; (throughout).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The words &#8220;moral character,&#8221; a mainstay of the prior version, now occur only one time in the entire publication.\u00a0 Unfortunately, it appears to have been implemented with a simple &#8220;find and replace&#8221; of the word &#8220;moral.&#8221;\u00a0 For example, where it once said:\u00a0 <!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Applicants with a criminal history (regardless of disposition) or questionable moral character&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It now says<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Applicants with a criminal history (regardless of disposition) or questionable conduct character&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What, precisely, is &#8220;conduct character?&#8221;\u00a0 Also, while &#8220;moral qualification&#8221; has been changed to &#8220;conduct qualification,&#8221; the very next sentence still says recruits can be &#8220;morally disqualified.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That notwithstanding,\u00a0the change\u00a0may clarify some other questionable terminology with which the Army often had to cope.\u00a0 It raised eyebrows when people said they needed to get a &#8220;moral waiver&#8221; to enlist in the Army.\u00a0 Now, they simply need a &#8220;conduct&#8221; waiver.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, &#8220;moral character&#8221; means more than simple conduct.<\/p>\n<p>You can read the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianfighterpilot.com\/articles\/files\/r601_210_2007.pdf\">original<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianfighterpilot.com\/articles\/files\/r601_210_2011.pdf\">updated<\/a> regulations (PDF).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The US Army recently published an updated version of Army Regulation 601-210, Active and Reserve Components Enlistment Program.\u00a0 The new version, dated 8 February 2011, makes an interesting change.\u00a0 From the list of revisions at the front of the regulation: Changes all references of &#8220;moral qualification or waiver&#8221; to &#8220;conduct qualification or waiver&#8221; (throughout).
