The officials said that while Mexico had its own unmanned aerial vehicles, they did not have the range or high-resolution capabilities necessary for certain surveillance activities.<\/p>\n<p>One American military official said the Pentagon had flown <!--more-->a number of flights over the past month using the Global Hawk drones \u2014 a spy plane that can fly higher than 60,000 feet and survey about 40,000 square miles of territory in a day. They cannot be readily seen by drug traffickers \u2014 or ordinary Mexicans \u2014 on the ground.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The RQ-4 <em>Global Hawk<\/em> is an autonomous vehicle flown by mouse-clicks and keystrokes, not by stick and rudder as the <em>Predator<\/em> and <em>Reaper<\/em> can be.\u00a0 Arguably, its use in Mexico could provide useful lessons learned for &#8220;unconventional&#8221; combat scenarios, including the ongoing conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The New York Times reports the United States has, with the knowledge of the Mexican government, begun flying drones over its southern neighbor to &#8220;gather intelligence&#8221; on Mexico&#8217;s ongoing drug war.
