Retired Marine Corporal William “Kyle” Carpenter was recently presented the Medal of Honor in a White House ceremony. During a Fox and Friends interview, Carpenter was asked about a tattoo he has of a Bible verse:

“Blessed be the Lord my Rock, who trains my hands for war, and my fingers for battle. Psalms 144:1”

Carpenter explained that he and his fellow Marines understood the mortal nature of their profession, and his faith was important [emphasis added]:

“That absolutely pertained to me and my fellow Marines that were going to be to the right and left of me, fighting day in and day out. We all understood that there was a good chance that many of us were not going to make it back.

We knew what we were going into. We didn’t know how bad it was going to be, but, you know, I’m a believer and I knew over there that I would need my faith, and you know they say no atheists in foxholes, we knew what was coming, so that’s always going to be a part of me, it always going to be there, and it touched a lot of the lives of my medical staff that worked on me day in and day out.”

It will be interesting to see if some of the more “militant” atheists take the Medal of Honor recipient to task for his faithful views, as they have others who have made similar statements.
