Reality Show Features USAFA Water Haze
ABC apparently has a new reality show that involves teaching celebrity contestants how to dive into a pool:
The contestants are trained by diving legend Greg Louganis in regulation platform and springboard diving, and will compete to have the best dive in front of a poolside audience.
It seems prior to the competition, the contestants were dared to jump off the highest platform — at 10 meters above the pool:
This is a height that some professionals train for years to do, but [Former Miss Alabama, Katherine Webb] was the first to take the challenge.
Webb’s pencil dive off the top left the others speechless — it isn’t fancy, but it was brave.
For those who attended the Colorado School for Wayward Boys, this will bring back memories of USAFA’s water haze — the water survival class that was a required part of the curriculum. Part of the course involved jumping off the 10 meter platform in BDUs as part of a survival exercise.
Who knew a USAFA cadet swimming class was something “professionals train for years to do?”
Urban legends abound of cadets who complete every requirement to graduate and be commissioned — but were delayed or denied a diploma because they refused to jump off the 10 meter platform. It’s unclear if there was ever any truth to that legend.
