In a short pieced entitled “Atheist says, ‘Boo!’ Navy jumps to attention,” Chaplain Alliance for Religious Liberty executive director retired Chaplain (Col) Ron Crews lamented the US military’s seeming subservience to Michael “Mikey” Weinstein:

“It’s just disappointing that the military, the Air Force and now the Navy, is just caving in to a shout from Mr. Weinstein,” says Crews. “He says, ‘Boo!’ and they hide – and that’s very disappointing.”

More interestingly, Crews highlights the core of the push Weinstein has most recently tried — and the one that brought him this “victory:” 

Crews says according to Weinstein and his ilk, people can have freedom of religion only if it is confined to a chapel.

That seems to be consistent with statements by Weinstein and his new “special assistant” Paul Loebe, who repeatedly said the unconstitutional Nativity would be constitutional if it was just on the chapel lawn.

Except the Constitution doesn’t say that, nor does any law, policy, or regulation.  Such a demarcation is fiction.

Some have suggested the theme is similar to the US governmental emphasis on freedom of “worship,” as opposed to freedom of “religion,” which critics say asserts that religious freedom only exists in private.

To be fair, Weinstein lost this same battle at Travis AFB last year and he never filed the Federal lawsuit he threatened.  Why the military suddenly reversed itself this year is unclear.  Maybe the Travis AFB commander knew something about Weinstein others don’t…
