Americans United Threatens CA Town over Nativity Proposal
Barry Lynn of Americans United for the Separation of Church and state threatened to sue the city of Santa Monica over its proposed ‘holiday display’ policy for the Christmas/Hanukkah season. Last year it had a “lottery system” which was dominated by anti-religious displays. Americans United
threatened to sue the City of Santa Monica if it moves forward Tuesday with a proposal by Nativity scene organizers that would ban signs and banners that “denigrate” holiday traditions.
It’s a mixed bag, actually. The concept of free speech would dictate that such offensive displays be allowed. On the other hand, no municipality is obligated to accept all displays. When a town holds a celebration of MLK, it is not obligated to give equal time — at the same time — to the KKK.
The US Air Force went through the same thing last December, when it finally authorized an atheist Air Force Staff Sergeant to erect a display at Travis Air Force Base — that mocked the religions of fellow troops.
Christian displays are often erected near Easter and Christmas, and Jewish displays are often seen near Hanukkah, as local communities recognize the seasons. Atheists have around 300 other days they could put up displays by themselves, but they don’t have an independent message to send. Why try to celebrate something of your own when its more fun to make fun of others? Seems like people have problems with that when its called “bullying…”
In the end, atheists are nothing more than an asterisk on religion. Then again, at least they’re thinking about Jesus; maybe one day they’ll see the Light.
