US Chaplains Help South Sudanese Military
US Africa Command chaplains recently traveled to newly independent South Sudan to meet their counterparts in the Sudan People’s Liberation Army. They have an interesting patch:
The patch bears a large cross and reads “Maybe God has chosen you for such a time as this,” which is a reference to Esther 4:14.
The SPLA chaplains are unusual among militaries. No formal chaplain corps exists, yet clergy in South Sudan have been moved on their own to fill the special role of military chaplains…
South Sudan is a predominantly Christian country, which also played into the move for independence from the primarily Sunni Muslim north. The two Sudans may yet end up at war.
