US Military, Catholic Church Fight Priest Shortage
The US military continues to face a shortage of Catholic priests, while the Catholic church itself has a shortage of church leaders:
Catholics make up the largest single religious denomination in the military…There is one chaplain for every 1,300 Catholic servicemen and servicewomen.
One way they’re attempting to alleviate the strain is with a joint scholarship effort, in which the military archdiocese splits seminary funding with a civilian archdiocese. The military then gets priority until the priest turns 62.
So far the program is working. A couple years ago there were just two seminarians on the path to becoming a Catholic chaplain. Now there are 31.
