Navy Admiral Receives Jewish Military Leadership Award
The Jewish Community Centers (JCC) Association has decided to present its Jewish Military Leadership Award to Rear Admiral Herman Shelanski, commander of USS Harry S Truman strike group. The group said the reasons include RAdm Shelanski’s
consistent concern for the ability of Jews in the Navy to fully express their Jewish identity while they serve their country.
As commander of the carrier USS Harry S Truman, RAdm Shelanski
installed an ark and Torah on the ship, and he has led the effort to supply all aircraft carriers with Torah scrolls.
RAdm Shelanksi was an E-2C Hawkeye NFO, and was also a part of the survey team ‘studying the effect’ of the future repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.
RAdm Shelansksi’s service demonstrates that members of the US military do not need to leave their faith behind, even as they rise to significant levels of command. In fact, RAdm Shelanski was able to use his significant command to positively influence the environment for sailors of faith on his ships and in his groups.
Further, the decision to award RAdm Shelanski an honor based on his faith and his military service is proof that one’s integration of faith and military service is something to be celebrated — which, in turn, inspires others to do the same.
