New Chapel Rising at Fort Campbell
The US Army post at Fort Campbell is getting a new chapel to support its 20 different religious services attended by more than 2,000 congregants each week:
The post’s seven chapels are getting too small for the needs of the soldiers and their families, said Chaplain (Col.) Roger Heath, the installation chaplain at Fort Campbell.
The $8.4 million, 32,900-square-foot complex will hold 1,200 people and include supporting campus areas. It is scheduled to be completed in February.
The article says its the first chapel to be built at Fort Campbell since the 1980s. (Two of the post chapels date to World War II.) Why now? It seems the ongoing wars have affected attendance at religious services:
The current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have increased the demand for religious services for the approximately 30,000 soldiers and their families there…
The religious support team at Fort Campbell is not insignificant:
Fort Campbell has 81 chaplains from 34 different denominations.
Nor are services they provide:
The religious services available at Fort Campbell range from Catholic, Protestant, Greek Orthodox, Muslim, Jewish, Pentecostal, Lutheran and even Pagan services.
It seems evident the US military understands the importance of spiritual fitness and religious freedom to the men and women in military service.
Fort Leonard Wood recently opened its own similar facility.
