General Mixon Revisits DADT Comments
According to the Stars and Stripes, LtGen Benjamin Mixon has “regrets” over the controversy caused by his remarks earlier this year on the policy known as “Don’t ask, don’t tell.” At the time, he wrote a letter to Stars and Stripes encouraging members of the military who opposed the repeal of DADT to “speak up.” Admiral Mike Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, subsequently implied Mixon should resign if he disagreed with the military’s policy direction.
“I do regret having put Army senior leadership on the spot with my response in the Stars and Stripes,” said Lt. Gen. Benjamin Mixon…
General Mixon reportedly said he planned to work “within the system” on this issue.
I didn’t find his comments offensive or derogatory at all; he was just stating his opinion. I do wonder why the senior flag officers continually assume/assert that most of the Military (and family) are opposed to the repeal of DADT tho…I’m in a heavily populated Military area with thousands of retirees as well, not to mention part of the bible belt. I get the “overall” feeling of ambivalence. I’ve talked to friends at other Military bases too, and they don’t get very many nay-sayers either. I admit it is AF bases so the other services may have other “data” on the subject.
I personally support the repeal of DADT, but I do not support silencing personal or public opinion for or by anyone. If one can publically denounce a religion then one can publically denounce homosexuality. I know, you can only have an opinion in the Military when they issue you one…but it’s still wrong in some cases.
think Dealer wrote in another column that its really about “MILITARY EFFECTIVENESS” and so far I’ve seen no evidence (so far) that the repeal of DADT will harm effectiveness.
watchtower,
There’s no evidence because the most recent study isn’t complete. The military asked for time to review the situation, and that report is not yet finished.
