DADT Protesting Soldiers to Subpoena Obama
According to Politico, Lieutenant Dan Choi and former Captain James Pietrangelo intend to subpoena President Obama in their defense of their White House protest in March.
The subpoena of the President is necessary for the defense to prove that Defendants were following and obeying lawful orders or directives by their President and Commander in Chief, and were therefore under an obligation and authority to act as they did in order to pressure him – in a non-violent, visible way – on this important public issue.
As previously noted, Lt Dan Choi has continued to appear in uniform and speak out against DADT — actions about which even one news reporter questioned the legitimacy. (He has even criticized the Commander in Chief.) By contrast, military members who have spoken out in support of the current law have received a somewhat more stern reaction from military leadership. Michael Weinstein’s MRFF has been quick to criticize Christians who have worn the uniform in public and said Christian things; however, since Weinstein supports the repeal of DADT, it is unlikely he will display intellectual consistency and respond in the same manner to Choi.
