Combat Losses: Into Thine Hand…

Michael Yon, a noted author, reporter, and blogger, has an interesting post entitled “Into Thine Hand I Commit My Spirit.”  It describes a unique memorial to fallen troops in Afghanistan.

The Soldiers (whose unit symbol is an Indian head) erected a tepee next to the base chapel; inside are the photos of 21 soldiers killed during their first months there.  Also inside is a Bible opened to Psalm 31, which contains the notable verses:

1  In thee, O LORD, do I put my trust; let me never be ashamed: deliver me in thy righteousness…

3  For thou art my rock and my fortress; therefore for thy name’s sake lead me, and guide me…

5  Into thine hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, O LORD God of truth…

15  My times are in thy hand: deliver me from the hand of mine enemies, and from them that persecute me…

17  Let me not be ashamed, O LORD; for I have called upon thee: let the wicked be ashamed, and let them be silent in the grave…

24  Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD…

There are also cigarettes in front of each photo; combined with the tepee, it seems to recall Native American rituals.

Yon’s striking photos of the site include a T-barrier inscribed with the mantra that the troops are “fallen, but not forgotten.”
