Islamic US Soldiers Balance Religion, Duty
Islamic US Army soldiers in Iraq, including Spc. Linda Boyed and Spc. Fatima Benasser, two Arabic interpreters, note the challenges in exercising their faith during Ramadan while still executing their mission.
Finding time to pray in a high op tempo can be difficult, and there is no mosque on Joint Base Balad. Still, they are able to use the military chapels, which serve all faiths. They say that fasting can be difficult or even impossible where duties are physically rigorous.
As with all religions, the US military accommodates free exercise to the extent that it does not negatively impact the mission. In addition, Chaplains will assist any military member to the maximum extent possible in meeting their spiritual requirements (including “secular” spiritual requirements, if the situation so requires). Should free exercise or accommodation ever be an issue in the military, contact your Chaplain as soon as possible.
