Christian NFL Punter Speaks at Prayer Breakfast

Brian Hansen, a former NFL punter and local director of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, recently spoke at the South Dakota National Guard’s 114th Fighter Wing prayer breakfast:

Hansen was introduced and his biography read by Lt. Col. William Tesch, 114th Fighter Wing chaplain.

“If there has been a theme running through the selection of speakers for our annual prayer breakfasts it would have to be faith-based leadership.” said Tesch. “This year, Read more

Public Statement of Christian Faith Causes Firestorm

After NFL-hopeful Michael Sam “came out” as a homosexual a few weeks ago, sports media was atwitter trying to find a locker room response that was headline-worthy. They thought they had one with Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins:

“From a football standpoint, if the guy can help us win, come help us win,” Cousins, who is a devout Christian, is quoted by MLive as saying during an appearance at Michigan’s NorthPointe High School. “Now, there are a lot of teammates in my locker room right now who may not have a homosexual lifestyle, but they have sins, too. They’re not perfect. So I don’t say they can’t help us win. Nobody’s perfect.”

That sounds like a reasoned, and reasonable, expression of tolerance from Christian perspective. That shouldn’t cause a ruckus, should it?

Right.

Outsports’ Jim Buzinski was among those who were critical of Cousins’ statements. “People like Cousins seem Read more

Air Force Welfare Inspection Nets USO Photos, Bible

The AF.mil article announcing the Air Force “health and welfare” inspections has become a repository for interesting stories about how inspections are being conducted locally.  Two interesting replies:

We had a team of inspectors come through my workcenter yesterday. They took down all of our photos of aircraft with nose art because someone might be offended. They also made me take down a USO photo of the dallas cowboy cheerleaders that was signed thanking my shop for our service…

mitch, sheppard

Targeting nose art is an interesting choice, given the Air Force itself displays traditional “pin up” nose art the National Museum of the Air Force.  For the time being, the Wright Patt base commander, Col Cassie Barlow, has Read more

Soldiers Get Super Bowl Monday Off

The Associated Press reported MajGen James McConville — “a Massachusetts native” — has declared Monday a day off for his soldiers so they can celebrate the Super Bowl.

In a video message posted on Facebook, Maj. Gen. James McConville of Quincy, Mass., said Monday would be a day of no scheduled activities in “recognition of your outstanding performance during multiple combat deployments.”

In the same vein, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Martin Dempsey posted an official video telling troops to enjoy the game — and declaring himself a Giants fan.

It is not unusual for members of the military overseas — where the Super Bowl may occur in the middle of the night or on Monday due to the time zones — to likewise get the day off.

As noted previously, religion isn’t the only “ideology” the military accommodates.  Turns out football is accommodated, too.

Air Force Endorses New England Patriots over Ravens

A C-5 Galaxy — the US Air Force’s largest cargo aircraft — from Westover Air Reserve Base, Massachusetts, performed a flyby of Gillette Stadium at the conclusion of the National Anthem on Sunday.  The ceremony opened the NFL Patriots-Ravens football game.

Inscribed along the bottom of the aircraft, visible from the stands, was an emblem and “Go Pats!”  The Patriots went on to win.

You never know, fighter aircraft flybys may have similar endorsements on their lower wings or fuselages…  Read more

Military Atheist Jason Torpy Calls for Tebowing Reprimand

Jason Torpy of the Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers picked up last month’s post on Tebowing, even plagiarizing text from ChristianFighterPilot.com in the process.  He reached a different conclusion, however:

Tebowing with Afghan kids is clearly an evangelical activity that must be pulled from the site with reprimands for the troop involved.  The NFL game is misappropriation of government resources — and any Marine will tell you his body is a government resource.

First of all, Tebowing.com a private website, so there is no governmental Read more

NFL on Football Flyovers

In 2008 the NFL did a short special on the inspiration of the military fly-by at the end of the pre-game National Anthem.

For those that sometimes don’t understand the impact a simple act might have, the video is moving.

The video can be seen at the NFL.  For a point of comparison, previously, a conspiracy theory group has complained that US military flyovers of NASCAR are endorsing a world takeover.
