Critics Try to Out Retired Gen Bob Dees, Carson Campaign Chairman

Over the past months, a few critics have tried to draw attention to one particular person on the staff of Republican Presidential candidate Ben Carson.

Originally his foreign policy advisor, Carson’s new campaign chairman is Bob Dees, a retired US Army Major General and former executive director of Campus Crusade for Christ (now “Cru“) which had a substantial ministry to the US armed forces called Military Ministry (now “CruMilitary“).

As early as November 10th of last year, James Bamford at Foreign Policy described Dees as

a retired general who believes Muslims pose a threat to the U.S., the military should spread Christianity, and Carson should be president.

But the statements that Bamford apparently found ‘disturbing’ were fairly benign:  Read more

Campus Crusade Hosts MRFF’s Atheist Paul Loebe (Video)

Paul Loebe, the former active duty Marine who is now Michael “Mikey” Weinstein’s newest “special assistant,” was recently one of two atheists invited to The Epicenter Experience, a college ministry event put on by Cru (formerly Campus Crusade for Christ, a frequent MRFF target). The “conversation” was led by Doug Pollock, and Loebe was (invited and) accompanied by fellow atheist Adam Hann (also a military veteran).

Doug Pollock’s “specialty” is helping Christians “increase the quality and the quantity of their spiritual conversations.”  In other words, how to talk to non-Christians well, which is a natural first step toward evangelism.  Pollock’s conversation with Loebe and Hann was, in essence, a demonstration.

The video of the “conversation” (below), provided by Cru, is actually fairly interesting (and its a fair bit better quality than the ‘pirated audio‘ the MRFF published). Much of the discussion was how Christians had caused the two atheists to feel, from experiences Read more

Another “Columnist” Comes Out as MRFF Ally

In Michael Weinstein’s world, those who support him are his friends, and those who oppose him are his enemies.  So it was with great joy that he publicized articles by his “new friend” Drew Miller, writing at PolicyMic — a ‘fan based’ site that highlights articles based on the controversy they create.

Miller wrote a series of three articles that essentially repeat, without critical thought, Michael Weinstein’s talking points.  He opens with the calm, balanced statement that Christians are trying to take over the military:

The underlying sentiment — that the military consists solely of believers, should be run as a Christian organization, and should seek to impose spiritual standards on its soldiers — is one of the most destructive threats to the efficacy of our military…

Chaplain Followed Unique Path from Africa to US Army

US Army Chaplain (Maj) David Waweru followed an unusual path to become a chaplain.  He grew up in Kenya, 20 miles west of Nairobi.  His interest in the United States came from his interaction with American ministries, specifically, Campus Crusade for Christ:

“The job that really stands out to me is when I worked for Campus Crusade for Christ,” Waweru said. “This job stands out to me because that is when I had a lot of time with American missionaries, and I believe that is where my interest in coming to the United States began.”

His work with Campus Crusade encouraged him to become Read more

Campus Crusade for Christ to Become “Cru”

The American arm of the ministry known as “Campus Crusade for Christ” will begin phasing out that name and officially become “Cru” over the next year or so.

Amazingly, that’s been big news, even at Fox, CNN, and the Washington Post.

In a classic case of “can’t win,” critics from both sides have blasted the organization.  Some supporters are disappointed to see what they feel is bowing to political correctness.  Some detractors think it is a weak attempt to mask the ‘true mission’ of evangelizing the world.

“Cru” is already used Read more

Army Looks at Alternative, Spiritual Medicines

According to a recent official news release, the US Army is researching “alternative treatments to medication” in its efforts to compose a “comprehensive pain-management strategy” including acupuncture, meditation, yoga, and biofeedback.

The first three of those have some form of spiritual or ethereal undertones, almost exclusively from eastern religious traditions.  The proposals, as discussed by Army surgeon general Lt. Gen. Eric B. Schoomaker, are an attempt to reduce the reliance on medication for every complaint.

Of course, religious faith does play a role in many aspects of life, including both physical and emotional healing.  Campus Crusade’s military ministry (see Links) has invested considerable energy in creating faith-based resources for returning servicemembers struggling with PTSD.

Military Ministry Supports Military Struggles

An article describes Campus Crusade’s Military Ministry, which provides support for members of the military and their families through deployments and re-integration, as well as Christian-based help in coping with PTSD.

US Army MajGen(ret.) Bob Dees has a unique take on their mission; he describes actively caring for or about servicemembers in all circumstances as part of their contribution to the Great Commission.
