A variety of websites reported on the FBI report released last month that indicated occurrences of “hate crimes” had risen in 2017.

Most noted the largest portion were “racial and ethnic bias,” but there was also a substantial increase in “hate crimes” based on religion:

There was also a nearly 23 percent increase in religion-based hate crimes in 2017…

Reports also highlighted the increase in anti-Semitic crimes, though anti-Muslim offenses actually decreased. From the report: 

Hate crimes motivated by religious bias accounted for 1,679 offenses reported by law enforcement. A breakdown of the bias motivation of religious-biased offenses showed:

58.1 percent were anti-Jewish.
18.7 percent were anti-Islamic (Muslim).

What no one seemed to mention was the “hate crimes” against Christians, which made up the third largest religious hate crime category.

Anti-Christian “hate crimes” trailed just behind anti-Islamic crimes at 11%, but merited not a single headline.

By contrast, the oh-so-persecuted atheist/agnostic demographic reported 0.5% of the listed “hate crimes” in the FBI report.

A crime motivated by hate (is there another kind?) is despicable on any level. To hear some people tell it, however, Christians are incapable of being victimized by such a crime due to their ‘position of privilege’ — a trope seemingly confirmed by the general tendency of the media to completely ignore the FBI’s report of hate crimes against Christians. In fact, in some mainstream media reports on the FBI publication, the word “Christian” only occurred as the surname of a perpetrator.

In an era in which some people claim religion is failing in America and secularism is on the rise, perhaps the knowledge that 10% of religious-based hate crimes are perpetrated against Christians — not atheists — will give someone pause.
