“Courageous” Actor has Air Force Academy in Mind

Last week Sherwood Pictures’ Courageous opened as the number one new film in America.  The church-produced film, operating on a $1 million budget, brought in more than $8 million in its opening weekend.

The outstanding movie is about 5 men, four on a local police force, striving to be better fathers.

Alex Kendrick, the main force behind this film and Sherwood’s prior Fireproof, Facing the Giants, and Flywheel, stars as Adam Mitchell.  His son, Dylan Mitchell, is played by Rusty Martin, Jr.

Martin, Jr., is currently a sophomore, but he’s started thinking about college:

He’s not sure about college yet but is considering the Air Force Academy in Colorado. He’s waiting to see what God’s will is for his life.

There isn’t much in the way of drama at the Air Force Academy (at least not in the classes offered in the curriculum), but even to be considering USAFA as a sophomore is a significant step.  Though he seems to want to see how his acting efforts play out, were he to attend USAFA he might be the first Wake Christian Academy graduate to do so.

If his interviews and personal efforts are an indicator, he might have the potential to develop into a fine officer.

  • Hi guys. Great article. Rusty is my son. He’s in all honors classes at Wake Christian Academy, is very strong in math and science, has just about completed his Eagle Scout rank, comes from a military family, and is a fine young man. He studies hard and is very interested in USAFA. Feel free to give us some pointers to help us secure a future seat at USAFA.

  • Hopefully you’ve already found the admissions site. With a strong technical background and nearly being an Eagle Scout, Rusty likely has a strong foundation for an application. The military academies value “well-rounded” applications with evidence of academic skill, physical fitness, character, and community service.

Start the application process early, and you might even consider a summer seminar (between junior/senior year) or just a visit to see what USAFA is like.
