Mikey Weinstein Threatens DoD with More Letters
When the DoD declined to respond to Weinstein’s letter demanding they withdraw participation from the National Day of Prayer held by Congress, he declined to make his normal vitriolic demands that the military would have to “tell it to the judge.” Instead, he threatened…more letters:
Weinstein [said] that “it is likely there will be more letters” sent to the Pentagon regarding their objection to the involvement of the Pentagon with the task force.
True to his word (this time) Weinstein wrote another (long) letter (PDF), claiming the National Day of Prayer event not only caused the DoD to violate the law, but also put Congress in violation of the law. Despite some concerted efforts on his part, the letter was not only ignored by the DoD, but also the press.
It seems Weinstein lost.
In that vein, Megyn Kelly on FoxNews hosted James and Shirley Dobson — the latter the chair of the National Day of Prayer Task Force. Dr. Dobson noted it is inaccurate to portray Weinstein as a group or movement, noting he’s only “one loud voice out there” and doesn’t warrant the attention he’s been getting:
He’s a professional atheist and has an organization that pays him a very big salary to do this…
For the record, Weinstein claims he’s not an atheist. He calls himself a “Jewish agnostic who prays.” Also for the record, Weinstein labels others with what he believes their religious views are, so it seems others are doing the same to him. (It also seems Weinstein’s exorbitant compensation, which he pulls from donations to his “charity,” has been getting a lot more notice recently. A Colorado Springs business magazine recently detailed his finances, highlighting the gaping disparity in Weinstein’s compensation compared with other charities in similar circumstances.)
Kelly concluded by highlighting, in a positive way, what many are now seeing: The military “isn’t backing down:”
In this particular instance, the military has told Mikey to pound sand, for lack of a better term.
As a result, Shirley Dobson called on people to thank the military for standing firm.
While much criticism has been leveled at the Air Force recently, it does seem the Army’s response to Weinstein is commendable. While the event has yet to occur, there is hope the military’s response is a sign of things to come. Should Weinstein lose what some have claimed is his apparent special status with the military, it is likely his attacks on Christianity would lose steam, and religious freedom in the military would prevail.
