Rutherford to be Next US Army Chief of Chaplains

Chaplain (BrigGen) Donald L. Rutherford is set to become the US Army’s next Chief of Chaplains.  The position is currently held by Chaplain (MajGen) Douglas Carver.

Rutherford is a Catholic and currently the Deputy Chief of Chaplains; he would be promoted to Major General as well.

Chaplain Rutherford recently spoke at the Redstone Arsenal National Prayer Luncheon on the topic of resiliency and spiritual fitness:

Rutherford’s building theme [touched] on the importance of building faith, both as individual civilians and Soldiers, and as a community.

“Faith gives us resiliency,” the chaplain said. “Spiritual fitness lessens depression, gives us a greater feeling of well-being, lessens the amount of alcoholism and drug abuse, lowers crime rates and brings better stability to marriages. Spiritual fitness helps us cope with setbacks and tragedy, and helps us grow out of adversity. Without faith, tragedy can bring on anxiety, anger and isolation from people.”
