John MacArthur: We Will Not Bow

In late July — just after the US Supreme Court’s decision on homosexual marriage — John MacArthur addressed the changes in cultural acceptance of immorality. At 56 minutes, a long but worthwhile watch:

The two greatest attacks of terror on America were perpetrated by the Supreme Court….The first one was the legalizing of abortion… The second…was the legalization of same-sex marriage. The destruction of human life in the womb—in a sense, the destruction of motherhood—and now the destruction of the family itself…

This nation, at its highest level, has taken a position against God. Such blasphemous rebellion is energized—it is energized by the corruption of the collection of sinful hearts, which make up this nation or any nation. There’s no question about that. But behind that collection of sinful, corrupt, human hearts—that make this kind of thing possible and acceptable—is the realm of Satan and demons…

I want to remind you that homosexuality, homosexual marriage, gender transition—these are not the real battlegrounds. The real battle ground is against God, and Christ, and the Holy Spirit, and the Bible, and the church, and the gospel. Any blasphemy against God comes from God haters, Christ haters, Bible haters, gospel haters. And they are fueled by the arch-hater, Satan himself…

It’s going to get worse and worse and worse as marriage disappears. Why get married? Too many complications. Too many questions. Too binding. People say, “Well the government shouldn’t even be in this.” You’re right, the government shouldn’t be in this, and they’ll get out of it fast enough. And people will be able to make any kind of contract they want, make any arrangement they want. Same sex. Opposite sex. Polygamy. People will—you watch—marry their dogs, their horses. Because Satan just wants to completely obliterate marriage…

Transvestism, as it used to be called, is not new. By the way, it is an abomination. That abomination is the exact same word used in Leviticus 18 to refer to homosexuality…

These kinds of sins that blur the clear distinction between male and female are satanic…

So, what do we do? Well, I want to focus on something tonight that I think is very important. God pronounces judgment on all who blaspheme Him—all who pervert His law, pervert His Word…Not only in a temporal sense, such as in Romans 1, where you have an outworking of wrath in the very society itself, but in an eternal sense. In Isaiah 5 we have a series of woes, a series of severe condemnations. One them is in chapter 5 and verse 20. Listen to this: “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness; who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!” Woe—damnation, cursing—on those who reverse morality, who reverse righteousness, who swap good for evil…

I’m hearing an awful lot from evangelical Christians these days, reading a lot of articles, that we need to be compassionate toward people in gender transition, which does not exist. We need to be compassionate toward people caught up in homosexuality. I agree. I agree. And the most compassionate thing you can do for those people is, in love, to warn them of eternal damnation—to warn them of eternal judgment. That’s compassionate… Preach the gospel; proclaim the gospel; proclaim grace and forgiveness such as we read in Isaiah and 1 Corinthians. But preach judgment…

The key here is at the beginning of verse 7, the middle of verse 7, “when the Lord Jesus will be revealed from heaven.” That’s our focus. It’s ever and always the Christian’s hope. No matter how bad it gets, Jesus is coming…

Folks, we have to warn this generation, don’t we? We have to warn this generation. It’s enough to know you’re going to die, and seal forever your eternity in hell if you don’t believe. But one day, Christ Himself will come to bring retribution across this entire globe. And they will suffer punishment. They will pay the penalty…

Let me give you a little hint. If you’ve got boys, you better be sure they become men. If you’ve got girls, you better be sure they become women. Don’t let them be tempted to this deviation and corruption. You never thought you’d have to fight that, did you?

  • The fact that my gay friends can get married has not destroyed my family. In fact, I don’t know of any family that has been destroyed by the legalisation of gay marriage.

    • @Donalbain

You subconsciously replaced “the” with “my,” which changed the meaning of the sentence. MacArthur, as have many others, referred to the institution of the family, saying homosexual activists have aimed to neuter the family to make it meaningless.

The family, as an institution, is the fundamental building block of a stable, prosperous society. Destroy the family — mom/dad/kids, husband/wife — and you will ultimately destroy the society.

That’s not something you’ll likely see immediately, nor even necessarily in a generation. But just because you don’t see it doesn’t mean it won’t happen.

  • I would also say that the chances of gay or LGBT “weddings” destroying the family institution is very unlikely given that the 98% prefer man and woman marriages, raising a family and doing those’s things “families” do on average.

IMO, divorce and unwed mothers have destroyed the institution of family many, many years ago. Although I disapprove of abortion except to save the mothers life or rape I would also not take the right of a woman away to decide if she wants to have a baby or not. Giving her the pro/con (medically speaking) of such a decision is also a very good idea. There are so many women and men that want to have a child, but can’t, for whatever reason; and an unwanted baby would be a wonderful gift.

No one should have the right to the “design” of how or what people should do. We are free!

In re: divorce, you would find many, many Christians agree with you. One of the main issues was the advent of “no fault” divorce, largely following the late 1960s. Some traditional family advocates even now look with chagrin on the “loss” the church has allowed in not defending marriage against divorce.

For the record, the US military also encourages its service members to strengthen their marriages and avoid divorce.

  • So, which marriages are being destroyed? Or is this some mysterious effect where you can destroy “marriage” while actual real marriages are left untouched?

  • Don — A LOT of Man & Woman marriages (No Gay or LGBT data reported so far)
    * Doesn’t indicate children or not (a.k.a. Family)

    From the CDC…2011 —
    -Number of marriages: 2,118,000
-Marriage rate: 6.8 per 1,000 total population
-Divorce rate: 3.6 per 1,000 population (44 reporting States and D.C.)

And just in case inquiring minds want to know; also from the CDC…2013 —
    * Doesn’t indicate if the man was around, cared or if it was an accident/rape etc…

-Number of live births to unmarried women: 1,595,873
-Birth rate for unmarried women: 44.3 births per 1,000 unmarried women aged 15-44 years
-Percent of all births to unmarried women: 40.6%

What about the fact that god does not exist?

    • Sorry to be off topic JD, but AFP started it ;-\

AFP — we are entitled to our opinion, but there is no “proof” either way. According to Fox News, we may get our wish soon because the GOP has said proof; and will MAKE us believe, or send us to a deserted island with the gays and LGBT’s because we have no morals.

I have no problem with the God believers and most of the ones I know do not want a theocracy or god(s) in government. So I feel “somewhat” better in my belief that we will keep or freedom from religion and separation of church and state [for the most part].

  • None of that data has anything to do with gay people being able to get married.

  • What does any of that data have to do with the fact that gay people can get married?

    • Yes Don chill, it was off topic. I was responding to AFP’s “fact” that the god did not exist. I’m delighted gay people can get married, especially in Rowan County Kentucky.
