Huckabee, Potential 2016 Presidential Candidate, on Military Religious Freedom

During a lengthy interview with the Baptist Press, former (and potentially future) Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee talked about religious freedom — and the military:

The American people must be willing to stand up for religious liberty, Huckabee said.

“The government’s job is not to say you can’t have a nativity scene, you can’t sing a Christmas carol, you can’t wear colors of red and green at Christmastime,” he said. “It’s the exact opposite. The government is prohibited from getting involved at all, making any decisions. It’s the role of citizens to express themselves if their expression infringed upon someone else.”

Those appear to be references to recent issues in the US military and the Veteran’s Administration. Huckabee later specifically mentioned the military:

The military is another battleground for religious freedom, Huckabee said.

“We’re having chaplains told, ‘Put your Bibles out of sight, don’t give one away, don’t pray in Jesus’ name,'” he said. “That’s unconscionable.”

The President of the United States is the Commander in Chief of the US military. Presidents often have their “key issues” with respect to the military. For President George Bush, it was care; for President Obama, it was reportedly DADT. If Huckabee were to become President with this perspective about religious freedom, the implications to the military could be interesting, particularly given the current social environment.

  • I’m pretty certain this guy has blown ANY chance of being a presidential candidate, especially after what he said recently about women and their libido’s and not to mention his alignment with christian revisionists. My local southern baptist and Military friends want a moderate as president. We define that person as educated, has faith (but keeps it to him/her self), cares about the Military, the homeless and less fortunate, supports FREE, or close to it, medical care, desires a free economy but ensures fair taxes for everyone to include big business….I could go on and on. This is not a political view; we cannot have those anymore because party doesn’t matter…it’s the person now and forevermore.

Oh, and by the way, our base chaplain came to commanders retirement with his bible in hand…not sure why people are lead to believe our preachers can’t have a bible on their desk…it’s just not true!

The subject of Huckabee’s sentence wasn’t women and libido; it was what Democrats thought about women and their libido. You should consider reading the full quote.

No one has said “our preachers can’t have a bible on their desk.” People have said they have been ordered to remove Bibles from their desks, or told by commanders they shouldn’t have Bibles on their desks. Those statements are factual, and true.
