Holy Cross Navy Cadets Host Competition

A US Navy article recently highlighted the Navy ROTC program at the College of the Holy Cross, a Catholic university in the Jesuit tradition.  While the friendly drill and athletic competition was the topic, it was mostly interesting to read the references to the Catholic college’s military program:

“I really enjoyed it,” said Holy Cross Midshipman 4th Class Annie Grimmke…

Given the sometime political sensitivity of associating the US military and religion, its a wonder a certain critic of Christianity in the military hasn’t demanded that Holy Cross either change their name or be stripped of their ROTC program.

The best part, though, is their mascot.

They’re the Holy Cross Crusaders.

The benign, perfectly acceptable, and normal NROTC program at that small school is probably giving that guy an aneurysm right now.

  • It must be noted that Holy Cross is and has been a Catholic religion based institution like Notre Dame since its inception. MRFF does not seek to take their identities away but only to guarantee that these religion based schools to not attempt to coerce students into converting or otherwise being subordinate to the religious tenets of the school.

It is assumed that the majority of students attending are more than likely of the same belief system so would probably participate in religious activity voluntarily. It is expected that Holy Cross, Notre Dame and others of their ilk would feature religious displays, mascots, decor etc. And as long as they do not attempt questionable religious activities MRFF wishes them well.

Thanks for making it clear you’re speaking on behalf of the MRFF, because that will make this point easier:

Why does the MRFF wish Holy Cross “well” — but Liberty University ill? Remember, Weinstein called Liberty’s curriculum “horrifying” — even though it is no different than other colleges.

Could it be that Weinstein has declared those students aren’t the “right kind” of Christian?
