Soldier Threatened over Chick-FIL-A

Many sites have now reported on US Army MSgt Nathan Sommers, a member of the US Army Band, who has apparently been targeted for his words or actions associated with “his conservative political and religious beliefs.”

As reported at FoxNews, Sommers

said he is facing retribution and punishment from the military for having anti-Obama bumper stickers on his car, reading books written by conservative authors like Mark Levin and David Limbaugh, and serving Chick-fil-A sandwiches at his promotion party.

For its part, the Army categorically denied the characterization:

“The Soldier is not, and never has been, ‘facing retribution and punishment from the military for having anti-Obama bumper stickers on his car, reading books written by conservative authors like Mark Levin and David Limbaugh, and serving Chick-fil-A sandwiches at his promotion party,’” Public Affairs Director Michelle Roberts told Fox News in a written statement.

Sommer’s lawyer says that’s “misinformed or disingenuous,” though it may also be very careful wording.  Sommers has indicated he thinks he is being targeted by a group of individuals within the band who disagree with his beliefs and are on a “witch hunt” against him.

Sommers, who has been working through this controversy for more than a year, is reportedly now also facing punishment for other unrelated administrative actions.

As an aside, Army MSgt CJ Grisham uses this incident as one reason for the demise of the MILBLOGs.
