US House Votes to Ban Same Sex Marriage on Military Bases

The US House successfully passed (243-166) an amendment to the 2013 Defense Appropriations Bill (a funding mechanism, separate from the National Defense Authorization Act) that would ban homosexual marriages on US military bases.  (By contrast, the amendment to ban military sponsorships of sports team failed.)

Given the recent history of conference committees and the Democrat-controlled Senate, it is unlikely the amendment will survive to the final bill.

  • Yay! Nothing says “religious freedom” like banning religious ceremonies!

  • More than 100 years ago the Supreme Court said “religion” is not a get out of jail free card to behave in any manner one wants. (In fact, they said it in defending the government’s ability to regulate marriage.) That position has been held through the current day. Under the federal government, homosexual “marriage” has never been legal since this nation was founded.

It’s interesting, though, that a group of people who railed against “religious bigots” are now testing the waters of using “religion” to justify their own actions.
