Rep Wants Navy Ship Named for Homosexual Activist
US Congressman Bob Filner (D-CA) has reportedly asked the US Navy to name a ship after Harvey Milk, a homosexual activist who was killed while serving as a San Francisco supervisor in 1978. Milk also served in the Navy in the early 1950s — apparently illegally, given his homosexuality.
Filner told the Navy it would “promote equality” in the post-DADT environment.
The Navy previously drew fire for naming a ship after Cesar Chavez, but defended the move, saying
the vessels recognize American pioneers and visionaries who changed the country and the world for the better.
Perhaps the ship could fly the rainbow colors previously raised in Afghanistan.
