Defense Department Highlights Member-Designated Benefits

In an apparent effort to help homosexual military members gain access to the most benefits they legally can, the Defense Department issued a “reminder” that some benefits are “member-designated.”  These benefits can go to any person, regardless of relationship (and thus avoid the restrictions of, say, the Defense of Marriage Act).

The DoD “identified” 14 benefits that can be designated to any person:

  • Service Members Group Life Insurance beneficiary;
  • Post Vietnam-era Veterans Assistance Program beneficiary;
  • All-volunteer Force Educational Assistance Program – Active Duty Death Benefit beneficiary;
  • Death Gratuity beneficiary;
  • Final Settlement of Accounts;
  • Wounded Warrior Designated Caregiver;
  • Thrift Savings Plan beneficiary;
  • Survivor Benefit for retirees;
  • Casualty Notification;
  • Escorts for Dependents of Deceased or Missing;
  • Designation of Persons Having Interest in Status of a Missing Member;
  • Veterans’ Group Life Insurance beneficiary;
  • Person Eligible to Receive Effects of Deceased Persons; and
  • Travel and Transportation Allowance: attendance at Yellow Ribbon Reintegration events.

The press release notes the DoD is

engaged in a careful and deliberate review of the possibility of revising the eligibility for additional benefits, if legally permitted.

This might indicate the DoD intends to “disconnect” some benefits from marital status.  If, for example, the DoD removed restrictions on housing that require members to be married, then anyone could live in base housing, married or not.  This course of action would be consistent with the calls by homosexual advocates who have asked the DoD to remove restrictions to permit homosexuals to gain benefits currently limited to married couples even while DOMA is in effect.

  • I read about your proselytizing. You are an abhorrent person.

  • If we just made same sex marriage legal they could be afforded all the rights they deserve without having to disconnect the benefits from marital status. If two consenting adults are in a long term committed relationship, they should be able to marry and have the same legal rights as the rest of us who want to spend our lives with the person we love.

  • Imagine the horror of actually respecting the wishes of serving soldiers who are risking their lives. It would be the end of civilisation as we know it!

  • I have always found Fred Phelps’ Westboro Church’s efforts anathema. In your case, I agree with them.

  • Generally only a closet case bothers to go after the gays. Your slip is showing.

  • Discrimination is a pillar of Christianity. Christian leaders are much better able to keep the flock together when an enemy is identified.

    Throughout history Christians have developed enemies against whom to direct their vitriol. This gives Christians a sense of togetherness and righteousness, Whether it was African Americans whom they enslaved or free blacks, native Americans and Asian imigrants who were later lynched and burned by Christisan Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, or todays vicious bigotry against Gay and Lesbian citizens, Christians have filled many a grave and hospital with the victims of their instituionalized hatred for their target of the day.

    Christian world domination is a major part of the Christian agenda. But today, when world populations are a tad tired of religious hegemony, our Dominion Christian friends need bigger and better reasons to exert their influence. Christians and Muslims have been butting heads for centuries and it ain’t about to stop. From the use of swords, spears, arrows and slings to firearms, bombs and airplanes we are headed for the final confrontation when our Christian and Islamic friends latch on to some nukes. BTW that’s why JD and his Dominion Christian friends in the armed forces are so determined to shape all personnel into being a weapons proficient and obedient Christian fighting force.

    These indoctrinated folks would be happy to blow the world up, kill themselves and take the rest of us with them. This danger of massacre by religion is very real and if not deterred will certainly mean the end of mankind.
