As noted earlier this year, Rabbi Menachem Stern has been trying for some time to become a US military Chaplain, but has faced resistance over his orthodox appearance.  He has apparently been unable to obtain a waiver for his beard.

He is now reportedly suing the Army for “denying him a commission” because of his religious tenets.  His lawsuit specifically cites the recent waivers given to Sikhs — men who were not Chaplains — and a bearded Muslim intern at Walter Reed.

Some have said it demonstrates a double-standard, as the military is permitting some, but not all, religious adherents to enter the service with waivers to their appearance.  In the very least, it demonstrates the complexity of issuing but a single waiver — it immediately becomes fodder for claims for more.

Stern is by no means the only Jewish person to have or want a beard in the military.  Chaplain (Col) Jacob Goldstein (photo here) has worn a beard for years in the Army.
