Harrier Pilot Set up for Failure

The Marines released the report of the AV-8B Harrier crash that occurred in North Carolina late last year.  With vague similarities to the F/A-18 crash in San Diego, it appears that the pilot was poorly chosen, poorly prepared, and contributed to the crash that claimed his life.

The report, as noted in the Marine Times, said the pilot hadn’t flown a Harrier in two months.  He had a mechanical issue that caused him to return to base in deteriorating weather; he failed to adequately conduct the instrument flight required and crashed.

The unit’s commander was relieved (as were many of the officers in the leadership following the Hornet crash in San Diego).
